Familiar Faces Race to Victory at 16th Annual Port Austin Run

Four athletes returned as champions at this year’s Port Austin Run.
Threatening clouds also returned, but this time the rain stayed away as
approximately 120 participants competed in the 8K run, 2 mile run, and
2 mile walk.

16-year-old Katie Hutchins of Carmel, Ind, won the women’s 2-mile run
for a 2nd straight year, finishing in 13:01.  Justin Noble, of
Brooklyn, Mich., took first in the men’s 2-mile run for the 4th
straight year.  His time of 10:48 was over a minute faster than
runner-up Jeremy Pawlowski of Bad Axe.

Coincidentally, next month Noble is marrying former 2-mile run winner
Katie Kelly, after meeting her at the Port Austin Run three years ago.

The 2-mile walk saw repeat victors, as well.  50-year-old Rod Craig
strolled to his 7th consecutive win in the men’s walk, finishing in
17:17.  Haley Ewald of Sebewaing, only 12 years old, won for the third
straight year in the women’s walk with a time of 25:01.

The 8K run featured some new victors.

Long time competitor Jeff Schember of Caro notched his first victory in
Port Austin, covering the approximately 5-mile course in 29:46.  His
time was about one minute faster than runners-up Nicholas Pawlowski and
Larry Kanaby, both of Bad Axe.

Billie Fierros, also of Caro, won the women’s 8K run in 38:20.  Amanda
DeSimpelare of Unionville was second in 41:11.

Charlotte Thuemmel and Aubrey Selaty of Port Austin directed the race.

All proceeds from the event are used to benefit Bluewater Thumb Youth
for Christ.
