19th Annual Port Austin Run has record field
(Port Austin - July 9, 2011)
A record turnout of runners and walkers competed in the 19th Annual Port Austin Run, held recently. Approximately 215 people ran or walked the 8K and 2 mile courses, which start and finish in Gallup Park and include local neighborhoods.
Ryan Esterline of Vasser took first in the 8K run with a time of 28:36, narrowly defeating former winner Jeff Schember of Caro by 13 seconds. 14 year old Casey Hadaway of Vasser was the first woman finisher in 33:22, defeating 2nd place runner Billie Fierros of Caro (34:54), another former champion.
The two mile run was won by Tommy Matuszak of Caro (10:25) while Caroline Knoblock of Hartley, Iowa, repeated as women’s 2 mile champion (13:11).
For the 10th straight year the top finisher in the men’s two mile walk was Rod Craig of Bad Axe (17:47), while Carol Maust of Unionville was the top female walker (25:19), edging out runner-up Mary Ann Kelly of Port Austin by only 3 seconds.
Results for the race were tabulated by Miller Race Management of Bay City. After the race, participants enjoyed fruit and bagels from the Port Austin Market. Many race participants won door prizes such as: gift certificates for meals at the Pasta House; ice cream from The Blue Moon, Grindstone General Store, and Twisters of Port Austin; passes to Wiley's Water-jet Slide in Kinde; and gift certificates to Port Austin Putt-Putt Golf, Up-The-Grove Gifts and Antiques, Port Austin Dime Store, Heins Hardware and Lisa’s Loft, and to the Port Austin Farmers' Market.
